Studio Meimberg, Berlin
ABOUT
In her acrylic paintings Jana Jacob explores private spaces: the actual home, the nakedness, the private relationship between two people and the private space behind the eyes.
FLY/FIGHT is a pair of two connected diptychs. Each painting shows the naked thighs of a person viewed from above, putting the viewer into the positions of the models. In this work the artist explores the narrow line, where closeness and desire turn into something threatening. The perspective of the viewer may be ambivalent: it can be both passive/receptive being touched or pinched but also active touching someone or squeezing and hurting someone.
UMARMUNG is a set of small paintings, which show the torsos of two naked people hugging each other. The viewing height remains the same. The details and directions of the depicted parts of the body create a symmetry of their own. The relationship of the two people becomes visible through their gestures, the affectionate touch and the secretive dark space between the bodies, whereas their identities remain hidden. The snapshot like frames of this encounter leave the spectator as a kind of secret observer.
HOME is a set of portraits of people in the most natural habitat: On their sofas. They are naked, sitting on their sofa with a relaxed physical and facial expression. All shown in a moment, when they are all by themselves and drop their outside-world-masks. Details like a little hint of a smile, the texture of the sofa`s fabric, the incident light are being explored and depicted with a cold color palette. Thus the interplay between private interiors and mental interiors becomes visible.
In PARTS the focus lies on details of human body parts, that are usually not exclusively shown in paintings. Jana Jacob chooses uncommon details and perspectives and puts them out of context, so they start to tell their own story. This may evoke a sense of ambiguity within the spectator.
